Urban cushion range

My inspiration is drawn from the often unappreciated beauty of the urban environment and man-made structures that surround us.

I am particularly interested in derelict and abandoned buildings as well as industrial structures like pylons and jetties. I am fascinated with how the process of deterioration of their outer skin exposes the underlying structure of their construction. This collection of contemporary handcrafted cushions is inspired by the combination of colours, marks and textures created by peeling paint, rusting metal, exposed girders and bleached concrete.

Each cushion is individually created using a variety of surface design techniques focusing on the quality of mark and depth of colour that can be achieved when dye is removed from black fabric. The cushions are then over-dyed or printed with further colour removal techniques. Each piece is constructed and deconstructed a number of times, building up layers and ageing and distressing them in the same way that the fabric of a building becomes weathered by the elements.

The nature of the processes I employ means that each cushion is unique.
